About the Waldo Broadband Corporation

Waldo Broadband Corporation ("WBC") is a new Maine Broadband Utility District organized under Maine law and approved by the legislative bodies (town meetings) of the five Maine municipalities of Freedom, Montville, Liberty, Palermo, and Searsmont. Through volunteer community education and outreach efforts conducted by the Southwestern Waldo County Broadband Coalition (“SWCBC”), an Inter Local Agreement that allowed for formation of the WBC was overwhelmingly supported by the residents of our five towns.

WBC's member towns have a population of approximately 5,600 residents, with approximately 3,300 potential subscriber locations along 343 road miles, across a total service footprint of 176 square miles. WBC averages about 31 residents per square mile, significantly less than the Maine average of 41 residents per square mile.

Our goal is to work as a not-for-profit corporation to provide the rural and underserved communities of member towns with access to high speed broadband internet service in order to provide educational equity, remote job accessibility, business opportunities, and access to quality healthcare services.

WBC originally planned to be a wholly independent, non-profit community run ISP , maintaining a direct relationship with our subscribers and communities, and able to set our own pricing and service offerings now and in the future. Due to many factors the WBC board has formed a Public Private Partnership with Direct Communication (UniTel).

The WBC board of directors consists of one director from each of our five towns. The board members were appointed by each town select boards. The board is strictly volunteer.
